Hi, y'all.

Just letting you know I'm not dead.

That is all.

I'm here in my tiny little town in Japan, hanging out in my new apartment. Small town, HUGE apartment. Which is nice. But it will take me some time to make this place feel like home... I might not get there within the year.

But yeah... I'm like, an hour away from anything besides your basic grocery store. The roads are really narrow (sometimes steep, too) and driving on the left is kind of scary-- I did it for the first time today. It's been really hot and muggy so I'm sweating like crazy. Air conditioning is not that great here. And I just saw my first scary apartment spider. Not in the apartment, thankfully; it was on the outside wall. And yeah, it was at least 4 inches across, leg span-wise.

But you know what? Given all that, I'm feeling pretty good about this place.

Supposedly I have two pretty decent English teachers (and therefore English speakers) at my main Jr. High School, though I have yet to meet them because of summer break. I start on September 1st, and until then I have time to myself and the ability to go into school and prepare whenever I feel like it. The people here are pretty laid back, and I'm told my job will only be as strenuous as I choose to make it.

I'm an hour away from anything fun, but the stuff that's an hour away is pretty cool. There's a mall complex at Meiwa town that's gorgeous and very Western-looking. And they have basically everything-- restaurants, grocery store, department stores, a Walmart-like supercenter, movie theater, arcade, etc. It's simple to get to, so I imagine I'll spend a decent amount of time there.

There's one other new JET teacher in my town, and he's really nice. Another guy who's been here for two years is staying on another year, so he'll be helping us out too. He doesn't live in town anymore because he moved in with his girlfriend Wendy in Ise, but their house isn't that hard to get to either. They took us out for Yakiniku, which was delicious.

I think I can do this. *takes deep breath*

Ganbarimasu!! >.<
